12. Signature of the mobilization executive order that gave rise to the first Argentine draft, 1896. The National Guard, organized definitively in 1852 after the Battle of Caseros, set a precedent for compulsory military service, as its members became part of the active reserve of the line army. At the time of the War with Paraguay, an executive order established a draft of voluntary contracted soldiers and also recruitment by levies. Years later, in view of a possible conflict with the Republic of Chile over territorial limits, it was decided to draft all citizens aged 20. Among the 12 marshalling points organized around the country pursuant to the executive order signed by the President of the Republic, José E. Uriburu, the largest one was located in Cura Malal and it was there that during 60 days the draftees from the City and Province of Buenos Aires received their military training. The site –which name means "stone cattle pen" in the Mapuche language, is a hilly zone in the South West of the Province of Buenos Aires and was selected to acquaint the citizens who came from the plains with exercises connected with possible Andean operations. This trial, carried out nation-wide, was very successful and the start of a system of drafting whole cohorts into the Armed Forces that lasted for one hundred years, until it was abolished in the last decade of the 20th Century. Major and Band Conductor Juan Ríspoli (Italy 1847-Argentina 1907), wrote the march called Cura Malal, as a tribute to the first Argentine draft. The march was published by Tradition in TR020101.

17. Letter of General San Martín to the Cabildo (Legislature) of Santiago de Chile, 1817. Written from Mendoza, during a trip to Buenos Aires, San Martín asked the Cabildo to make available the 10.000 pesos in gold ounces that had been allocated to him, to establish a national library. It should be noted that at the time San Martin could barely cover the expenses of the trip that he was undertaking.

19. Battle of Cancha Rayada, 1818. Royalist forces attacked the camping grounds of the Army of the Andes, managing to overcome the defenses and inflicting large losses of men and materiel. Colonel Juan Gregorio de Las Heras succeeded in organizing an effective defense with his unit, the 11th Line, but did not manage to contain the Spanish attack.

20. Battle of Membrillar, 1814. Chilean General Bernardo O'Higgins defeated the army commanded by General Gainza. The Independence forces included the column of Auxiliares de Chile, an Argentine infantry corps sent to assist the Chilean revolution by the Buenos Aires Government Junta, headed at the time by Major Juan Gregorio de Las Heras.
